Unfortunately, not much in this account of mental patients being misdiagnosed, invalidated, ignored, neglected, and abused in the late 1800s surprised me. At the time, however, I’m sure it was shocking for people in the city to learn of the type of treatment these patients received, and Bly’s account helped to improve conditions somewhat. It’s kind of interesting to while keeping in mind how much is different now and how much is the same. Conditions in hospitals are obviously better nowadays due to regulations of various sorts, but the mentally ill are still victimized in the system every day, and mental illness still bears a huge stigma. In this account, Bly herself, despite clearly having a great deal of compassion for her fellow inmates, displays her own ableism throughout, noting her fear of some of the more obviously insane patients and seeming to pity others. She also more or less affects a caricature of insanity in order to get herself committed (without having any experience with actual mental patients). It works, which serves to show just how arbitrary diagnosis and intake were at the time, but it also shows just how “othered” the mentally ill were (and still are, to a somewhat lesser degree) in society, even by human rights champions like Bly. In many cases, they’re completely written off as practically inhuman.

The only reason I’m giving it four stars instead of five is that occasionally the flow is a bit strange. Bly will be talking about various patients she’s met, then suddenly shift to a different topic or incident, and then later mention the same patients as if for the first time. It’s not terrible, but breaks the momentum a bit
