With such a groundswell of geek support for Boneshaker, I guess I expected more. Priest’s premise, summed up in a 5 page preface, is wonderful. Once we move from history to the characters’ viewpoint, the world just didn’t live up to its promise. Lots of action, not a lot of suspense. Plenty of heroism, not much growth. It’s basically the novel equivalent of a summer blockbuster, a grand page-turner, but not really my thing.
Sometimes the writing style of this annoyed me a little, but overall I found the book gripped me enough to not put it down in a hurry. There was a severe lack of relevant backstory (perhaps in an attempt to suppress it until the end), while sometimes the irrelevant backstory went a little too far. All in all, you can’t take a book with zombies in it too seriously, so don’t bother. It’s a bit of fun and should be read a such. I’m sure one day it’ll make for a very pretty steampunk film too.
