Interesting short novel, or novella?, written by Nellie Bly as a series of articles for the New York World (newspaper) in 1887. Going undercover at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell Island, New York, Nellie uncovered the grotesque, cruel and most likely illegal living conditions the women and girls there had to endure. Also, the fact that many of these women weren’t ‘insane’ but had been locked up or put away by (sometimes) well-meaning parents, spouses or other relatives, or even friends if the person had no living relatives. Women were incarcerated simply for acting a bit strange, or for not understanding a police officer, judge, doctor or other official because they spoke a different language. (Nellie encountered both a French-speaking and a German-speaking woman this happened to.) Inmates were beaten, choked, pinched, forced to take cold baths one after the other in a common tub, given nearly inedible, uncooked food to eat, and lived in cells which were unheated. The clothing was inadequate, the nurses were often immoral and vile. They laughed at, teased, and tormented particularly vulnerable women and the whole thing was just a (literally) living hell.

Because of Nellie’s ‘expose’ an investigation, overseen by a judge and jury was impaneled, the asylum was investigated, people were interviewed, some lost their jobs, and the budget of the institution was increased. I don’t think things were improved as Nellie would have liked, but conditions were better.
