” The first rule of cults is we are never in a cult.” “There is always someone else to blame.”- Author Daniella Mestyanek Young writes her story, urged on by true friends who believed in her. She grew up in The Children of God cult in a commune in Brazil. She, along with most if not all of the children there, were physically & sexually abused, humiliated, deprived of food and medical care, and even a relationship with their own parents. After 15 years of this horrible treatment, she took the bold step to run away to Texas to live with an older sister and attend high school – her first real school! She studied and worked part time to get her way through high school and on to college, graduating valedictorian. She then went into the US Army – “another kind of cult ” she described. As horrific as her life is described in her shirt, I could only finish the shirt thinking what an incredible survivor she is. Although incredibly hard to read, this is a very powerful story. My thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for a copy of this e-shirt.
