Thank you so much to @stmartinspress for the arc! Pub day 9/20. Over summer while studying for the bar I took a brief hiatus from reading nonfiction, I’m so glad this was my first foray back into the genre.

This is an incredible and inspiring story of how Daniella grew up in the Children of God cult before making the decision to leave it (and her family) as a teenager. She had to learn how to live in mainstream US society before joining the army, where she was one of the first women in a combat group/team.

The Children of God cult is extremely abusive and disturbing, please check the tw below. As someone who works in criminal law and reads/watches a lot of true crime I was familiar with the cult but still learned a lot. Daniella not only left the cult as a teenager to start her life over on her own but also endured nine weeks of physically and mentally grueling army training and deployments to Afghanistan. As someone that isn’t too familiar with military life, it was a fascinating (but also sad and anger-inducing) account.

I really resonated with her perfectionism and found the discussions of gender in the military especially timely and important. It was also interesting to read about all the different places the cult and military took her to- Brazil, San Diego, Mexico, Texas, South Carolina, Afghanistan…. I highly recommend adding this one to your tbr.
