Basically “Dawn of the Dead 2004, the novel trilogy” (with added romance). This is a very able action-adventure-drama about two women (one a bisexual careerwoman, one a housewife from an abusive marriage) who meet up and try to survive together during a running-zombies apocalypse, and how they eventually join a small community of survivors in Texas.

The beginning, where they’re on the run, is more exciting than the later parts that are all about community-building and defending the fort. The characterizations of the two main characters are good, but the human bad guys and side characters are fairly caricatural. I almost gave this three stars for popcorn entertainment value, and I almost the others in the series, but after ing reviews of the second two s it sounded like things get kind of stupid later on ((view spoiler)). As a side note, the main characters in this are ‘aware’ of zombie movies, and they’re always saying things like “Too bad these zombies aren’t slow like the ones in the movies! Ha ha!”… but c’mon, Rhiannon Frater, you know you wrote this *after* 28 Days Later and the Dawn of the Dead remake came out. If your characters are supposed to be so genre-savvy, have they not watched any zombie movies since before 2002? -_-

Also, political aside: as a supporter of Palestinian rights, I found the character of Nerit, the Israeli sniper, to be stereotypical and annoying. Like in the “World War Z” movie, Israeli soldiers are always fetishized as these superhuman badasses, and Nerit talks about how she learned her sniping skills fighting “evil,” but what does that mean? She’s 90 years old and she was fighting Nazis in WWII??! No, she’s supposed to be more like 40-50 and she was fighting Palestinians, and that’s not EVEN a simple good-Israelis-vs-evil-Palestinians conflict. Imagine how ers would feel about an Apartheid-era white South African police officer saying “my job is fighting evil.” Misleading and lame, though sadly typical for how Americans view Israel
