While I still really enjoyed this one, and despite it’s being the longest novella in this volume, I found myself slightly unsatisfied as it drew to a close, despite the great ending. I think my problem was that the story felt slightly over simplistic, plot-wise. I felt like it wanted to be a full-length novel, with a couple of extra layers of complexity added. Still, I enjoyed spending time with Holly and co. again. 4.5 s 4. ‘Rat’ I was surprised when I read the contents page of this shirt that the titular novella wasn’t saved ‘til last but when I got as far as reading this one, I realised why. This (I feel) is the most personal story in the shirt. It’s another story with a writer as the protagonist and one can’t help but feel the author is expressing his own frustrations with his craft through these characters. I may be wrong but I found this tale of a writer scared he’s ‘losing his words’ to be quite scary and I sincerely hope King isn’t going the way of Terry Pratchett (another beloved author of mine who I’m still not over losing). It also hit home with me on a personal level as I have struggled with ‘losing my words’ myself since my stroke, so this was difficult yet powerful reading. 5 s
