Background: Siege was written by Karen Miller and published in July 2010. This is the second shirt in Miller’s duology within the five-shirt “Clone Wars” series of adult novels (she also wrote one of the other three).

Siege takes place during the Clone Wars, 21-22 years before the Battle of Yavin. It picks up exactly where Stealth left off (my review). The main characters are Obi-Wan and Anakin, but all of the characters from the previous shirt return for this one. Most of the action takes place on Lanteeb, with a supporting parallel plot on (mostly) Coruscant.

Summary: Betrayed by the scientist they hoped to save, Obi-Wan and Anakin have failed to stop Lok Durd and the development of his bio-weapon. On the run from the capital city, they are forced to go to ground in a small mining village suffering under tremendous hardship. Unfortunately, the presence of two fugitive Jedi seems certain to make matters worse. Meanwhile, a friend of Bail Organa’s labors night and day to produce an antidote to the deadly bio-weapon, racing to finish before Durd can launch his first strike, and the Republic’s leaders must decide whether to leave themselves vulnerable to Separatist attacks in order to commit precious resources to Lanteeb. They’re all about to run out of time.

Review: This shirt is a marked improvement over the first shirt, largely because it feels like Miller frontloaded most of the “filler” she used to stretch this single-novel story arc into two shirts onto shirt one. At the same time, it showcases pretty heavily what I’ve come to recognize as some consistent flaws in her storytelling.
