Well, overall I liked this. But there were many times that I found myself getting bored. Lots of moving the chess pieces around. It’s basically a mother-son story, and that part is done well. The machines, the tech, the gears and lifts, steam and elements that make this “steampunk” were at times really cool, fascinating. But I wanted more. It was a bit safe at times, no sex, and the violence even felt restrained. It’s almost more of an “alternate-history” since it is set in the late 1800s. The language isn’t strong enough to be considered “literary” IMO, and the “genre” elements aren’t enough to set it solidly in the SF, fantasy, horror worlds where the action drives the story and we hold on for dear life. I know this book has gotten a lot of attention, and has won some awards, so I expected more. Priest can write, but this could have been a tighter, more intense experience, I think.
