somehow trainspotting got turned into a series and I’m not mad about it. Skagboys is the third and is a prequel to the events of original trainspotting.
Much like trainspotting, it doesn’t have a linear plot, but focuses more on the character development and their descent into heroin addiction. The chapter “rehab diary” stands out to me as a great exploration of a involuntary rehabilitation process and was the strongest part of the novel for me. Rentons’ search for the roots of his addiction behaviour is an excellent character study. While Renton is searching for one specific event, we as readers see the bigger picture, including the environmental causes of such behaviour. I loved the explanation of the historical background (e.g. notes on an epidemic chapters), which touched upon Scotland as the capital of heroin addiction.
All in all, it is a great, yet not completely necessary, addition to the trainspotting world.
