Priest’s previous novels have been character-driven affairs with excellent pacing, so I’m not sure what went off the rails on this outing. Perhaps she became so enthralled in creating her own steampunk microverse that she spent less time working on these key components than usual, in which case I blame her editor for allowing it. The plot? A mechanical experiment gone awry opens a volcanic seam of caustic “blight” gas which then creates a wasteland of downtown 19th century Seattle and turns the hapless victims exposed to it into a hoard of mindless flesh-eating zombies. Really?? The characters? Dull, wishy-washy and inconsistent, all pointlessly racing around in elaborate masks, or in stupid steam-punk airships, and all of who one could not care less about. Even the uber-bad guy, Dr. Minnericht, is a caricature and a bore.
