While I enjoyed the overall idea – steampunk meets zombies meets apocalyptic events – I think I was expecting a little more from the story and the characters in general. I wanted more from Briar and Zeke…they didn’t feel as real to me as they should have considering their history and family lineage. I’m willing to check out the sequels to see where Priest takes us and builds upon the foundations she has laid with this first volume. Part of my issue may have been with the narration – I listened to the audio book version and while Wil Wheaton’s sections were fine, I really didn’t care for Kate Reading’s style and cadence. I may well have enjoyed it more if I had read the print version instead…
