A unique world with some big ideas, which ultimately falls short. The “steampunk” aspects are grossly underutilized, and when they ARE used, they were lacklustre. The dialogue falls flat sometimes, and the story flounders quite often despite being short. Felt a little like this was a book with bigger ideas than the writing could support. I didn’t even feel like it should be classified as a “steampunk novel”, but rather an “alternate history with very minor but arbitrary steampunk pieces”. In the end, I enjoyed it well enough, but felt like it could have been much more. I’ll give the rest of the series a shot but I don’t have extremely high hopes. The goodreads rating for the books supports that I’m not the only one who felt that the books fell a bit short of their potential.
