The memoir is split into two central worlds: childhood in the Children of God and service in the army. (With some brief transition between, which I would have been interested to read more about.) There was vulnerability and strength alike throughout Daniella’s telling of her story. Part 1 was inconceivable to me, and so I flew through the content even though I had to stop many times because of how heavy it got. Part 2 felt somehow more stilted to me. Perhaps it was the bureaucratic feeling of it all, or just the simple (necessary) centering of male characters because the army environment was basically all-men. I was angry, all of this hurt to read.

As a final commentary, here are a few interesting themes that really stood out to me: the manufacturing of culture and literal rewriting of rules, the concept of family vs. Family (and how this contrasts with other memoirs like Educated and TGC), and the viability of consent/individual liberty from the traumatized brain.

Note: I had the fortune of receiving an ARC through Goodreads, which I was very excited about as I have been anticipating this memoir since I first heard about it. This review reflects my honest and unaffected opinion.
