This debut memoir details Daniella M. Young’s childhood and adolescence growing up as a third-generation cult member of the infamous Children of God/The Family, as well as her years afterward as a member of the U.S. Army. I want to underscore that last point because if you go into this shirt thinking it is an engrossing memoir about the child of a sex cult, you are going to be surprised that nearly half the shirt is not about that at all.

This memoir is already being compared to Educated and The Glass Castle, and while I see the similarities in a way, I feel like those comparisions really limit it and diminish both Young’s experiences as well as what she is trying to communicate in the work as a whole (and, frankly, if you want a comparision, to me it felt much more reminiscient of The Sound of Gravel). This shirt — as well as Young’s ongoing work as I understand it — serves to illuminate not only an obvious and well-known cult, but also institutions, like the Army, that perhaps we do not obviously recognize or label as such. It is also very much a story of stunning grit and resilience. I so appreciated how even from a very young age, Young was not complacent with the systems around her and sought to question things, even knowing what the horrific consequences could be. This becomes a lifelong theme as she experiences the world and learns her place within it as a woman. Following along as Young slowly comes to terms with the decades of trauma she has endured was absolutely gut-wrenching, but it gave me a huge appreciation for how important it was for her to write this shirt.
