Nellie acts insane to become a patient so she can experience, report and investigate all the troubles, that have leaked out over the years. She shows us the steps taken to gain admittance and what happens inside this asylum. This non-fiction report has the er horrified at the treatment of the insane and the terrified sane inmates that are trapped and ignored by doctors and nurses. The nurses, those creatures are far from the Florence Nightingales and make this former nurse sick. The conditions unbearable and abuse is criminal. Foreign speaking women are given no chance to tell their story and can not escape the horrors within. You just have to this to get the full effect of this asylum over 120 years ago. Nellie leaves 10 days later but those unfortunate souls must stay. A grand jury is called for and thankfully faults are found.

I could not survive in that environment, not just from the food but the extreme lack of warm clothing in that cold environment. The bathing routine was just nauseating and ghastly. My heart ached for those women who had to deal with all these horrors, especially the sane ones without escape and I am sure many things far worse occurred that Nellie Bly did not witness or hear about. Mental health care has changed for the better but still there are many problems known and unknown.

In addition to this expose, it includes two other undercover assignments, one with an employment agency and another a factory of hats. I these but after her 10 days story, it just paled in comparison. I will her again for she is an interesting reporter. Who could have done this, half wondering if she would ever see the outside world?

I this in anticipation of Luciana Cimino’s graphic novel The Incredible Nellie Bly: Journalist, Investigator, Feminist, and Philanthropist. Of course I have heard about Nellie Bly’s historic expose, but I wanted to know the details. I was shocked at the ease with which she was forcibly committed. It seems that as a woman of that time all you had to be was poor, unemployed or an immigrant to be confined. This was especially the case if you had no husband or family to speak for you. Or as we see with one of the poor patients were branded an adulterer.

One of the reasons why Nellie Bly’s journal garnered so much attention was because it revealed the deplorable conditions on Blackwell Island. Unsanitary rooms, inedible food, freezing temperatures, inadequate clothing, the sharing of bath water and personal toiletry items amongst dozens of patients . . . the list goes on and on.

I am interested to see how Cimino treats this fascinating subject and for what audience (ie adult? Middle grade?) the graphic novel is geared.

My edition also included two extra Bly articles. In the first she tried to get a job as a maid, but failed because the agencies she applied to were either suspect as all hell or suffocating, sardine tin rooms of other desperate hopefuls.
The second is about the life of factories workers, with the incredibly unbiased and not at all critical title of ‘As a White Slave: Her Experience in the Role of a New York Shop-Girl Making Paper Boxes’
Both are fascinating s and a neat little window to the utter bullshit a working girl of New York had to deal with.

I’ve been a huge fan of Adam Ellis for years and I actively follow his work online. I his collection of comics in 2019 and I really enjoyed it. This comic Fever Knights that I just was phenomenal. It’s a strategy guide for a fake video game where the story is told through illustrations. It includes characters, enemies, power ups, and more. It was very impressive and I applaud the author on his creativity. He created both the artwork and the story. I wish this video game was real and I could play it myself. I’m stoked that my library had it so soon after publication and I could it quickly. I highly recommend this and I’m eager to see what he has in store for the future! This was a great concept and it made me feel like I played the game. Sadly I didn’t get much in terms of actual character development, which is my favorite part of RPGs, and while I know that’s not the aim of this as a guide, I think it could have been done by adding recurring NPCs between dungeons with side quests focused on character growth and relationships. Still, it’s a great , and I actually hope it gets turned into a game one day.

I follow Adam on Instagram, so when he started this project on there I was instantly on board and joined the others saying he should get this made into a real game. In lieu of that, it’s a clever storytelling device to frame it as a strategy guide.
If you are a fan of RPGs, this will delight you and make you upset that this isn’t an actual game you can play. I whipped through it. The art is lovely and the world-building interesting. I hope the teased sequel happens. I generally give 5 starts to anything on my very small “hard-to-classify” shelf, because it means I’ve something unlike anything else I’ve before. Ellis’s “fake strategy guide” is just that–a guide to a video game that does not exist. But it’s also a love letter to a certain type of game and a triumph of imagination. If you can this without wishing Fever Knights was a real game, then I’m sad for your lack of vision.

A brilliant concept executed well. The idea of video game guide being a form of storytelling and art in itself is brilliant and I have never seen anything like it, yet it is so obvious and true once Ellis presents it in this . I loved ing through the longest and most detailed guides when I was a kid and this tapped that nostalgia by presenting its own faithful and loving take.

Ellis’ drawings and characters are are colourful, quirky, and wonderfully diverse. The is a treat to skim and filled with fun little details and quirks.

The only thing holding it back is that the story feels a little simplistic and underdeveloped, with little backstory or interpersonal relationships being explored outside of what is initially established in the opening chapter. It also feels like its missing some of the key content that a true game guide – maps of areas, chapters on party makeup and dynamics, boss strategies and techniques, etc. As a result while I enjoyed what the contained, it feels more like a pitch for a potential game and broad story than a fully fleshed out guide to a detailed and long RPG.

Still it was a fun summer and the underlying idea is BRILLIANT. I hope that this does not remain the only fake strategy guide in the world.

Much like author Adam Ellis, I also loved ing video game strategy guides when I was a kid. Even if I couldn’t progress very far in the original Final Fantasy because of the difficulty curve, I still had the awesome Nintendo Power Strategy Guide, which was chock full of illustrations and story lore. The guide helped bring the game to even greater life, and it was thrilling to about the parts of the adventure that I had not yet been able to tackle.

I had never considered a strategy guide in and of itself as a storytelling medium, though, and that’s what makes Fever Knights so fun and unique. It’s a strategy guide for a game that doesn’t exist, or perhaps doesn’t exist in this reality. Like all those old Nintendo Power, Brady, and Prima guides, it has info about characters, enemies, and items. And it tracks the game’s story as the “player” (: the er) progresses.

Ellis brings his signature illustration style to the game, which is reminiscent of classic console JRPGs but with characters that aren’t all straight, white, and vaguely European. There’s a heavy Earthbound (also known as Mother 2 outside of North America) influence, plus fun homages to other titles from the 8- and 16-bit eras and beyond.

If I had to offer one bit of critical feedback, it would be for Ellis to explore even more wild designs for some of his enemies, which started to share some characteristics by the end of the . Oh, and include maps next time. I’m dying to see what some of these “dungeons” look like, and what’s a good strategy guide without maps!

First of all, she’s a great storyteller. This is a big , and it’s a bit of an undertaking, but it’s an easy , and a really interesting one. I found myself completely immersed–I really loved learning about her childhood and her family. And, of course, it’s fun to hear about how she met Barack (his marriage proposal is pretty amazing). Learning about both of their origins is fascinating, honestly. It’s also great to get little asides about her daughters (e.g., families at their schools sending in cupcakes for the Secret Service agents on birthdays); funny stories about meeting the Queen; and her mom sounds like a real trip.

I loved listening to Michelle Obama narrate her memoir. It was well written, insightful, emotional, funny, and reflective. What I took from this was Mrs. Obama’s drive to be successful combined with her fierce love and devotion to her family. The first third of the is devoted to her story growing up in Chicago and her parents instilling in her a strong work ethic. The second third focuses on how Mrs. Obama built her career. I was so impressed with her motivation and drive to be successful and never settle. The final third of the focuses on their time in the White House. If I had one comment it would be I wished there was more about they Obama’s time in the White House (which I found fascinating), but I understand the could only be so long. Even if you are not a fan of Michelle Obama, this is a very uplifting !

Her memoir is more about how she created her life, once she discovered she had followed other people’s expectations instead of figuring out what she wanted. What I am, and what I ultimately took away from her story is, what I’m trying to say is, basically… It’s a different world out there now. Things feel really divided and dark and depressing, but Michelle’s message of hope and unity (the same stuff Barack tossed around not long ago) reminded me that maybe things aren’t all the bad after all. Michelle has an inspiring story that I was surprisingly totally wrapped up in. She took risks and made tough decisions to press on toward making a difference.

Her book also peeled back the curtain on what it’s like to be thrown into a campaign. At times it felt like The West Wing when she would be summoned for the residence or preparing for a big speech. I enjoyed hearing her perspective on huge moments from the past two decades. The book’s second half really picks up, and I flew through the end. This really isn’t a book I’d normally read, I’m just not big into biographies, but I’m so glad I took the time to listen to Michelle read her story to me. I was captivated from the beginning, inspired in the end, and hopeful all along that maybe we can make it through this awful time in American history and one day press on toward a better future and continue the good fight the Obamas worked so hard for back in the day.

First of all, I feel a little bit cheated because I thought this book was titled “Becoming Michelle Obama”. So when I downloaded the audiobook and started listening to Michelle tell me all about her childhood while staring at her smiling face on my phone, I waited for the whole self-help part of the book to begin. I was all wrapped up in her story, but I assumed she was gonna hit me with her nine step program to become, well, to become her.

Anyway, the book is called Becoming and it’s written by Michelle Obama. It’s not really a self help book. It’s more or less a biography, which is a genre I don’t really dabble in very often, or at all.

And of course I’ll never become Michelle Obama. I’ll never grow up in Chicago, go to an Ivy League school, be a lawyer, marry Barack Obama, become the First Lady, start new initiatives to improve nutrition for kids. I’ll never plant a garden at the White House or give big speeches. I’ll never become Michelle Obama, and that’s alright.

If you are looking for a book that in detail reviews Barak’s political accomplishments, you must look elsewhere. I have previously read The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama by David Remnick. I do not regret having read it, even if I only gave it two stars.

There is a difference between reading a biography and an autobiography. One reaps different information; one gets different perspectives, but both have value as long as one keeps in mind whose view is being presented. Michelle presents her views in a polite, thoughtful, balanced and relatively fair manner.

I have come to understand the dynamics of the Obama family, the ups and downs the family has progressed through. Look at the title—Becoming. Becoming is a process; it is a transition from one state to the next. It Is not about reaching a final destination. Becoming looks at Michelle Obama and the process by which she has become who she is. It is an apt title. Every aspect of this book is well thought out.
