My one_fear.jpg is people giving me books unsolicited, because then they cease to become books and become handily bound physical manifestations of Guilt, sitting on my bookshelf untouched. It’s very mysterious how that happens. I believe I’ve had this one since summer 2018 or thereabouts.
This was then 80% of what I was thinking of every page turn. “God, I hope the person who gave this to me doesn’t literally die of old age or coronavirus before I can talk to them about it.”
This was not conducive to a relaxing reading experience, but these days, what is?
Good news! Book-giver is still alive and has not yet died of old age or coronavirus. Whew.
Re: actual review, my thoughts or having them seems almost beside the point (“I’M FREEEEE” was my main takeaway after reaching the last page), but… I’m mostly relieved this wasn’t what I thought it would be. Instead of a tiresome ode to pulling oneself up by one’s bootstraps, Gladwell dismantles the myth in a gentle, entry-level sort of way. Am I already far enough left to not require the lesson, yeah, so let’s close out with a different observation: of the titular outliers that Gladwell uses to illustrate his point, none of them are women, except for the very last chapter, where he talks about his own family?? (For pedants: the two little girls in the school chapters do not count.) Went from bemused to resigned as the book went on and this fact went unrecognized. No point to make, really; I’ll just let the unvarnished fact sit. Circumstance, indeed.
