Balmain launches The Together Project https://olashirt.com/balmain-launches-the-together-project/ Fri, 12 Nov 2021 09:30:09 +0000 https://olashirt.com/?p=16004 Luxury fashion house Balmain has announced its new initiative, The Together Project.

The initiative focuses on the relationships between artists and the people who are most important to them, exploring them in various mediums and creations from different artists. The project will give free reign to an esteemed artist each year, with the purpose of creating art that reflects the many ways for people to come together.

Balmain is collaborating on this project with Greek director and visual artist, Evangelia Kranioti. For the exhibition, Kranioti filmed and photographed a variety of subjects – songwriter and model Rina Sawayama alongside her mother, choreographer and acrobat Yoann Bourgeois and his wife, and adult film star and entertainer Allannah Star.

The films present “intimate musings on the beauty of affection and intimacy – while adding more poignant and sometimes darker reflections of fears, tragedies, disease, rejection and fragility.”

Balmain will sell postcard-sized video stills taken from Kranioti’s work, donating the proceeds to Red, an organisation focused on strengthening health systems. The proceeds will help Red raise money for The Global Fund’s work in fighting AIDS and Covid-19 in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Everyone loves to focus on fashion’s social media and digital evolution,” said Olivier Rousteing, creative director at Balmain. “Evangelia Kranioti’s beautiful work reflects those truths and her ‘Together’ exhibition is a perfect way for us to begin our new ‘Together Project’.”

The Together Project was inspired by #BalmainEnsemble, a movement that began during the early days of the pandemic and highlighted the importance of community and relationships.

Sofitel Hotels and Resorts, Leica and Paris’ Galerie Sator have partnered with Balmain in order to make the donation to Red possible.

The first exhibition is displayed inside the Balmain stand during this year’s Paris Photo, which runs from November 11 to 14. Kranioti’s The Together Project artworks will be available for purchase, with a percentage of the sales going to Red.

“If the pandemic taught us anything,” said Rousteing, “it’s that we all still need actual contact, communication and companionship – for when we are actually together, we are stronger, healthier, happier.”

The Metaverse needs physical stores to reach new audiences https://olashirt.com/the-metaverse-needs-physical-stores-to-reach-new-audiences/ Wed, 10 Nov 2021 05:26:53 +0000 https://olashirt.com/?p=14991 The opportunities for virtual worlds and metaverses may still be reliant on physical retail, where shoppers are continuing to spend the majority of their time and dollars.

In a report released by the New York Times last week, Meta – formerly known as Facebook – is planning to build physical stores in order to build its Metaverse. The social networking giant said the brick and mortar outlets would showcase its virtual reality and augmented reality devices to a wider public.

The metaverse is niche

The connection between the physical world and the metaverse is a device, and these devices, gadgets and other such tech items remain niche, are often expensive, lacking in simplicity in design and user experience. Their appeal is also limited to what some say are hobbyists and ‘tech geeks.’ The brick-and-mortar channel may prove to be the technological bridge to the metaverse.

Both Google and Amazon are launching experimental retail outlets to support their own metaverse initiatives, said Yahoo Finance. “The idea of harnessing the physical world as a complement to the metaverse isn’t new, it has been utilized for high-end gaming experiences.”

“Meta stores would also give the public a chance to sample everything from headsets, to Facebook’s Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses, and its Portal video calling device.” Facebook’s stores would be centred on delivering experiences and learning about its technologies, as opposed to only selling products.

Facebook’s rebrand comes at a time when its tarnished image could use the diverted attention to focus on its hardware and software lines. An accompanying retail presence could help reframe its narrative. Still, a number of skeptics say the metaverse would remain too expensive and only interest a niche market of hobbyists and tech geeks, said Retail Wire.

Stella McCartney unveils ‘Future of Fashion’ exhibition at COP26 https://olashirt.com/stella-mccartney-unveils-future-of-fashion-exhibition-at-cop26/ Sat, 06 Nov 2021 08:59:29 +0000 https://olashirt.com/?p=13493 Stella McCartney has launched the ‘Future of Fashion: An innovation conversation with Stella McCartney’ exhibit at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow as part of the HRH Prince Charles Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) at COP26.

The installation explores Stella McCartney’s nature-positive approach to fashion, as well as the brand’s use of next-generation materials, highlighting current achievements, as well as plans for the future.

Among the materials on display are pieces made from Bolt Threads’ Mylo mycelium unleather grown from mushrooms, the world’s first vegan football boots created in collaboration with Paul Pogba and Adidas by Stella McCartney, regenerative cotton from Söktaş, and Evrnu NuCycl and Econyl regenerated nylon sourced from post-consumer waste and ocean plastics.

The pieces can all be seen orbiting a sculptural and living fungi display, visually elaborating on the message shared with the brand’s spring/summer 2022 catwalk show.

Commenting on taking part in the SMI, Stella McCartney said in a statement: “This is the Decisive Decade and if we do not act decisively, we know the consequences. A football pitch is disappearing from the Amazon every minute and 80 percent of that area is being used for animal agriculture. The future of fashion and our planet is vegan.

“I hope that by representing our industry and revealing my current material innovations at COP26, I can inspire action among private sector and government leaders by driving more nature-positive investments and incentives. To not collaborate now would be an injustice to future generations and to those already suffering the worst of climate change’s effects. This is our chance and I do not believe in waste.”

Otrium launches into the US https://olashirt.com/otrium-launches-into-the-us/ Thu, 04 Nov 2021 12:03:55 +0000 https://olashirt.com/?p=13121 End-of-season fashion marketplace Otrium has announced its expansion into the US.

The marketplace, which specialises in selling excess inventory, will launch in the US with brands including Adam Lippes, Belstaff, Cynthia Rowley, Faherty and Reiss. Many of the brands on its European platform, including Karl Lagerfeld and Asics, will arrive later.

Otrium intends to help brands avoid the economic and environmental consequences of excess inventory, enabling them to set up their own store through its marketplace. It gives the brands full control over pricing, merchandising, visibility and placement, meaning that the brands can sell their excess products without being degraded by third party retailers.

In order to launch into the US, Otrium completed Series C funding of 120 million dollars via Bond Capital, Index Ventures and Eight Roads. Kering Group is an early stage investor.

Senior technology executive, Zuhairah Scott Washington, formerly with Uber and Expedia Group, is leading this expansion as President.

“Fashion is the world’s largest art form and the way many choose to express themselves daily. Unfortunately, the industry has been trapped in a broken cycle of inefficiency, leaving brands with few viable ways to efficiently sell excess inventory in an economical and environmentally favourable way,” said Washington.

“Otrium has developed a tech and data led approach that gives the industry greater control and insight over this inventory, and access to data which will eventually lead to a more sustainable way for fashion to be produced and sold.”

According to Otrium, 70 percent of the world’s clothing ends up in landfills. In using the marketplace, excess stock is sold within weeks, avoiding resellers, stock buyers and eventually, landfills.

“Our long term goal at Otrium is to help brands produce clothing that ends up being worn resulting in less waste,” said Washington. “Otrium’s brand partners access our large audience of fashion-lovers using our platform. Our technology enables us to reach our members, in a discreet and highly targeted way – something that isn’t possible in the traditional outlet.”

With over 300 fashion brands on its app globally, the marketplace has around 3 million registered members. Otrium has seen its revenue double in 2021, and is available in over 20 markets across Europe and now the US.

5 things to know about the Y2K trend https://olashirt.com/5-things-to-know-about-the-y2k-trend/ Sat, 23 Oct 2021 07:37:29 +0000 https://olashirt.com/?p=9369 If fashion needs another reminder that trends are circular, the current craze for Y2K style is case in point. From its background and how it started to the key items to invest in, FashionUnited has narrowed down the five things you should know about the trend that’s taking the industry by storm.

Gen Z originated it on TikTok

With TikTok’s booming popularity during the pandemic, many movements have emerged on the platform, too. One of the main fashion trends to pop up? Y2K style. Gen Z and Millennials have taken over this recognisable style, which nods to the noughties. From late 1990s crop tops to early 2000s low rise jeans, the wardrobe mainstays worn two decades ago are making a comeback with younger generations embracing their childhood references.

A trend fitting for uncertain times

The beginning of the millennium came with a bunch of uncertainties, from conspiracy theories stating that the world would end to a cautious take on technology. Today, we see ourselves in similar times with a future that seems all but certain. Gen Zers find comfort in what they already know and what feels familiar, hence a throwback to styles that they can actually remember. Nostalgia also takes part in the growing success of the trend – it’s emphasised by many TV reboots such as Gossip Girl, Sex and the City, Friends or Legally Blonde.

A mix of pop culture and technology

The Y2K trend blends elements of pop culture with tech details from the early 2000s, mixing futuristic details with retro inspirations. The Internet boom made chunky sneakers, basic T-shirts, double denim and loose tailoring come at the forefront of fashion while pop culture popularised baguette shoulder bags, cropped and tie-front tops, low-rise bottoms, bodycon dresses, velour tracksuits and bubblegum pink. Today, the trend draws inspiration from icons such as Carrie Bradshaw, the Bratz dolls and characters from Clueless, Gilmore Girls and Mean Girls.

Item of the week: the coated trousers https://olashirt.com/item-of-the-week-the-coated-trousers/ Sat, 23 Oct 2021 07:34:46 +0000 https://olashirt.com/?p=9363 What it is:

From leggings and jeans to tapered trousers and culottes, bottoms come with a textured finish for the seasons ahead. Coated trousers have a new, on-point style that’s modern while sticking to a tried-and-true design that makes for a good wardrobe mainstay. Whether they have a shiny patent look or more subtle oily coating, textured trousers are a suitable alternative to tight denim while still looking put-together and polished.

Karl Lagerfeld
Karl Lagerfeld

Why you’ll want them:

Adding a bit of edge to classic jeans, coated trousers work year-round. Customers can opt for a beige or light-grey hue for the summer months while the winter season will welcome darker colours such as black, burgundy and olive green. They offer more comfort, but never neglect style and allure. Choosing coated jeans is a surefire way to invest in a good workwear essential that customers can either dress up or down for the office or casual weekends.

Sandwich
Sandwich

Where we’ve seen them:

Coated trousers have been striding down the runway this winter, and will stick around for the following season, too. At Alyx, they were extra-long, white and paired with a tonal denim jacket while at Dsquared2, they came with a transparent coating and were paired with heels for an eye-catching effect. Dolce & Gabbana presented a distressed silver option toned down by a navy pea coat and Armani Exchange showcased an over-the-top metallic gold version highlighted by a black logo T-shirt.

NU IN
Nu In

How to style it:

Vila’s emerald green coated trousers are a good essential to seamlessly transition from classic denim to a more daring option – they’ll look good all winter long paired with a plush black sweater and masculine loafers. The Kooples has designed a more rock version that’s just as versatile. They come with a contrasting silver-tone button placket and are cut for a slim fit that’ll elongate the silhouette. If your customers are looking for a style that plays a bit more with proportions, Sandwich’s coated trousers are the ones – they’re slightly tapered and come in a navy blue hue that can easily be sported throughout the year. Karl Lagerfeld’s take on the trend is more daring – its burgundy, high-waisted option will surely make a statement paired with suede ankle boots and a bodysuit. Finally, NU-IN’s ones have a wide leg cut and are finished with slits at the hem to let knee-high boots peek through.

Banana Republic launches sustainable collection with Harbison https://olashirt.com/banana-republic-launches-sustainable-collection-with-harbison/ Sat, 23 Oct 2021 07:32:36 +0000 https://olashirt.com/?p=9358 Retailer Banana Republic has released an eco-conscious collection in collaboration with sustainable designer Harbison, with the partnership aided by Harlem’s Fashion Row.

Inspired by his family, mother and upbringing, Charles Harbison, the designer behind the label, utilised natural dyes and organic products for the limited edition line. Vivid colours are the staple palette of the collection, which features simplistic dresses with exaggerated sleeves, two piece sets, cashmere coats and top and skirt co-ords.

In an interview with Banana Republic’s The Journal, Harbison said on the collaboration: “The great thing about Banana Republic and the scale is that we can hit amazing quality, but at a more price conscious point of view while infusing it with ideas around sustainability.

Image Banana Republic x Harbison
Image Banana Republic X Harbison

“And it’s such an invaluable and exciting and paradigm shifting partnership for me and I think for the market, I think it’s going to serve as a great example.”

Charles Harbison, who won the Harlem Fashion Row x Banana Republic design contest last year, focused on sustainable practices for the production of the collection. Products in the line utilise Lenzing Ecovero, a raw material nylon, as well as organic, virgin, responsibly sourced or recycled fabrics.

When asked about the sustainability factor of the collection, Harbison said: “With this partnership, I wanted sustainability to be central because it’s central to us. And it’s a way that I could continue moving the needle forward. Not only from an identity point of view, but in something that’s even bigger than identity and that’s our existence.

As an industry, we are not doing our part. I’m trying to do what little bit I can and do so increasingly over time, this is a first step. We will get better. It is imperative that we get better.”

The collection is now online at Banana Republic’s official website, with the range also hitting a number of the retailer’s stores. The collaboration’s advertisement campaign, that runs alongside the launch, features Harbison’s mother and other models in shots that stay true to Banana Republic’s most recent style reform.

SS22 trends: the power of yellow https://olashirt.com/ss22-trends-the-power-of-yellow/ Sat, 23 Oct 2021 07:29:52 +0000 https://olashirt.com/?p=9353 Although spring-summer 2022’s star colours range from deep ocean blue to soft mango, we’ve specifically spotted yellow as next year’s colour of choice. It has taken over endless collections and is used for a large array of styles – minimalist outfits, feminine details or textured fabrics all come in this summery shade that lifts up spirits. After months of dullness and negativity, the most recent collections have bet on joy, playfulness and positivity. There’s an enthusiasm that’s highly visible on the runway and yellow certainly is the right colour to keep doing so.

Alexander McQueen SS22 Alexandre Vauthier SS22 Max Mara SS22
Alexander Mcqueen Ss22 Alexandre Vauthier Ss22 Max Mara Ss22

From saturated hues to pale shades, yellow runs the gamut for spring-summer 2022. Pantone’s ‘Popcorn’ is a mellow, buttery yellow that’s been selected as one of the agency’s SS22 fashion colours. We’ve seen it with Alexander McQueen’s tulle galore – Sarah Burton showcased a sleeveless bustier ankle-length dress in that specific hue. Dawei chose it for an office-appropriate total-look and Max Mara used it on a slightly oversized coat. This creamy yellow is definitely sticking around for the next season – trend agency WGSN and colour agency Coloro predicted it would be one of the five key colours of next spring and summer.

Though soft yellow tones will surely pack a punch in 2022, brighter hues have also been spotted in the collections. Pantone’s ‘Fragile Spout’ sits between neon yellow and apple green – David Koma presented several silhouettes sporting the shade and Etro used it to create a tonal look for its menswear show. Acne Studios also opted for a vibrant option, but paired it with a see-through ensemble to play with contrasts. At Alexandre Vauthier, a bright yellow look was accessorised with matching furry heels.

Autumn-winter 2021’s shows had already started showcasing yellow details and saturated pieces, but Resort 2022 – think Carolina Herrera’s bright gowns – reaffirmed this joyful shade as a statement. We’ll be seeing it in lingerie and loungewear collections too, adding a bit of sparkling positivity to our casual wardrobes. Pantone has introduced many new shades that confirm the growing popularity of the colour, from light ‘Baby Breath’ to vibrant ‘Illuminating Yellow’.

Menswear collections have also introduced yellow pieces, chief among them Paul Smith and Jil Sander – it’s a colour that’s both genderless and neutral. Many stalwarts of the industry have used the shade to reinvent their staples and propose new iterations: Chanel showcased a light yellow tweed ensemble with a mini skirt and cropped blazer, Dior featured a bright A-line dress with a matching coat while Prada presented both in Shanghai and Milan a bright nipped-in, long sleeve dress.

Whether it’s a neon yellow or a less saturated hue, there’s no doubt it’ll add joy and positivity to our wardrobes next summer.

Los Angeles’ Hollywood Boulevard will be playing set to the show scheduled to take place on November 2.

Gucci selected Los Angeles because they wanted to highlight the intersection of creativity and culture within the city and its rebirth post pandemic. As part of Gucci’s Equilibrium program, the brand will provide support to Los Angeles and Hollywood communities through a donation to the city’s homelessness and mental health programs.

This year, Gucci is also marking its 100th anniversary. Gucci’s parent company Kering recently posted Q3 results, and while the overall company saw growth, Gucci did fall short of expectations. The brand, along with Balenciaga, are considered the two biggest cash cows for Kering.

menswear trends: the new preppy https://olashirt.com/menswear-trends-the-new-preppy/ Sat, 23 Oct 2021 07:27:08 +0000 https://olashirt.com/?p=9345 Often associated with classic East coast style, the preppy look has been around for decades, showcasing an array of staples such as vests and cable-knit sweaters. For spring-summer 2022, the preppy style is getting an update: it’s not necessarily associated with traditional references anymore.

The seasons ahead will welcome a new kind of preppy: more casual and comfortable, it plays with contrasts and proportions. The last year and a half has put forward a need for easy layers and comfort, and the preppy wardrobe has adapted, too. The cuts are less restrictive and we’re seeing slightly oversized shapes taking over.

The trend comes in many different iterations: we’ve spotted cosy knitwear and textures, plush handles, dropped shoulders and loose fits. When it comes to colours, brands are opting for a more daring palette, too. Bright reds, deep purples, vibrant yellows and electric blues enter next summer’s wardrobes, whether it’s with total looks or pops of colours. When designers opt for more neutral hues like Brunello Cucinelli, playing with shapes and textured materials has been a compelling way to revisit the preppy style.

While suit trousers take on the straight leg style and shirts and ties are paired with comfortable shorts, shoes are getting an update, too. Loafers, derby and boat shoes are sticking around, but come with a bit of an edge. We’ve seen lug soles and utility-inspired details make their way to traditional preppy footwear.

Next summer, classic preppy pieces such as the sweater vest and fitted shirt are paired with contrasting pieces. A smart button-down is worn with a bucket hat at Prada, a knitted vest is sported with plush mid-calf socks and sandals at Mans and outfits are accessorised with belt bags instead of leather satchels. Casablanca opted for a casual varsity jacket donned with suit shorts and loafers.

Another option to embrace the new preppy trend: leaving buttoned cuffs open for a cool, relaxed look like at Egonlab. On the other hand, Paul Smith and Ernest W. Baker chose a more classic tailoring, but uplifted it by using shades of yellow and purple to create tonal looks.

Preppy style is still an integral part of the menswear wardrobe, but for the spring-summer 2022 season, it’ll shift towards a more comfortable and laid-back style that’ll surely fit our new lifestyles.
